An Analysis of Monotone Follower Problems for Diffusion Processes

چکیده
We consider a singular stochastic control problem, which is called the Monotone Follower Stochastic Control Problem and give sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of a local-time type optimal control. To establish this result we use a methodology that has not been employed to solve singular control problems. We first confine ourselves to local time strategies. Then we apply a transformation to the total reward accrued by reflecting the diffusion at a given boundary and show that it is linear in its continuation region. Now, the problem of finding the optimal boundary becomes a non-linear optimization problem: The slope of the linear function and an obstacle function need to be simultaneously maximized. The necessary conditions of optimality come from first order derivative conditions. We show that under some weak assumptions these conditions become sufficient. We also show that the local time strategies are optimal in the class of all monotone increasing controls. As a byproduct of our analysis, we give sufficient conditions for the value function to be C on all its domain. We solve two dividend payment problems to show that our sufficient conditions are satisfied by the examples considered in the mainstream literature. We show that our assumptions are satisfied not only when capital of a company is modeled by a Brownian motion with drift but also when we change the modeling assumptions and use a square root process to model the capital.

متن کاملA Hybrid Proximal Point Algorithm for Resolvent operator in Banach Spaces
Equilibrium problems have many uses in optimization theory and convex analysis and which is why different methods are presented for solving equilibrium problems in different spaces, such as Hilbert spaces and Banach spaces. The purpose of this paper is to provide a method for obtaining a solution to the equilibrium problem in Banach spaces. In fact, we consider a hybrid proximal point algorithm...
متن کاملOptimal Control under a Dynamic Fuel Constraint
We present a new approach to solve optimal control problems of the monotone follower type. The key feature of our approach is that it allows to include an arbitrary dynamic fuel constraint. Instead of dynamic programming, we use the convexity of our cost functional to derive a first order characterization of optimal policies based on the Snell envelope of the objective functional’s gradient at ...
متن کاملA New Method For Solving Linear Bilevel Multi-Objective Multi-Follower Programming Problem
Linear bilevel programming is a decision making problem with a two-level decentralized organization. The leader is in the upper level and the follower, in the lower level. This study addresses linear bilevel multi-objective multi-follower programming (LB-MOMFP) problem, a special case of linear bilevel programming problems with one leader and multiple followers where each decision maker has sev...
متن کاملN ov 2 00 7 A Singular Control Model with Application to the Goodwill Problem
We consider a stochastic system whose uncontrolled state dynamics are modelled by a general one-dimensional Itô diffusion. The control effort that can be applied to this system takes the form that is associated with the so-called monotone follower problem of singular stochastic control. The control problem that we address aims at maximising a performance criterion that rewards high values of th...
